On Saturday 23rd April, 24 junior squash players from various clubs in Essex competed at The Marconi Club in Chelmsford.

The juniors were divided into three age groups and each played three matches in a Monrad style tournament, culminating in finals commencing at 2.00pm. Below are the finalists of each age group.

MARCONI 2The 8 – 10 age group final featured Antony Yip from Brentwood and Johnny Lynch from Felsted. Both boys were extremely competitive and played a great final with Antony being the eventual winner.

MARCONI 5The 11 – 13’s final was perhaps the most exciting match of the day and featured Oliver Harris from Colchester, who could have played in the 8-10 age group, but opted to join the 11 – 13 event, and Jessica Baxter, also from Feslsted and once again relatively new to squash.

The match was tense and the momentum shifted on numerous occasions. In the fifth game it looked as if Jessica was to clinch it and then Oliver dug deep and managed a string of points to take the match 3-2.

MARCONI 4The final of the 14-17’s event had Alex Walton from Kingswood up against Will Coupe from Marconi. Will fought hard and tried every angle to combat Alex’s competent game. Experience once again showed itself and Alex took match in straight games to win the title.

All the juniors enjoyed three matches and had a great day. Thank you to all the parents and teachers that accompanied the boys and girls and helped out with marking to make the day a success!
