England landed two European Junior titles at the weekend helped in no small part by Essex Senior coach Lauren Selby and junior champion Alice Green.
Former WSA player Lauren has been recruited into the England fold and along with fellow coach Neil Guirey helped guide the White Rose nation to the Under-15 and Under-17 European team titles.
Fourteen year-old Alice from Billericay made her debut for England in Ireland last year and she was again selected for the prestigious Euros held in Porto, Portugal over four testing days.
The Under-15 line-up of Jared Carter, Oscar Beach, Jack Newey,Ellen Cooper and Alice overcame Turkey, Wales, Portugal and Germany in the early round-robin stages before beating Holland in the quarter-finals and Scotland in the semis. England then justified their number-one seeding by beating the Czech Republic in the final.
The Under-17’s squad of Kyle Finch, Harry Falconer, Adam Corcorcan, Lucy Turmel (Suffolk girl who trains at OTW) and Grace Gear were equally dominant. Scotland, Hungary, Portugal and Germany fell in the the round-robin before Denmark (quarters), Ireland (semis) and France (final) all fell their wake as England strode to the double success.
Lauren told EssexJuniorSquash.com :”Our players equipped themselves extremely well. They can be proud to call themselves European team champions. As coaches, we learned a lot about the players. The England talent pool is pleasingly strong.”
