Owain Taylor will captain Wales at European teams as Alice Green makes England debut

The success of Essex players continues to make headlines beyond the county borders.

Last weekend Billericay’s Alice Green made her England junior debut at the Five-Nations tournament in Dublin against France, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

And in 12 days’ time, Owain Taylor from Colchester, who plays at Lexden and Ardleigh, will captain Wales at the European Team Championships in Finland. Owain, who played two for Essex in their triumphant Inter-County victory at Edgbaston, has also been included in Wales’ senior team for the European Championships in Riccione, Italy later in the month.

Stratford’s Richie Fallows will also be competing in Finland in both the teams and the individuals. He’ll line up in England colours.

Richie also heard this week that he will compete in the qualifying competition for the Allam British Open at the University of Hull in May after winning the English Under-19 Championships last weekend. He sealed his place in the PSA competition starting on May 10 by winning a tough five-setter against George Parker,

Richie commented: “I have grown up seeing all the greats win the British Open titles and you can see how much it means to them. It was quite emotional seeing Ramy [Ashour] and Laura [Massaro] win last year and to just be a part of the most prestigious tournament is great for me and I just hope to play well and hopefully one day win a title.”

Tickets for the main draw at The Sports Arena in Hull start at £10 and are available through ticketmaster at: www.ticketmaster.co.uk/British-Open-Squash-Championships-tickets/.

Meanwhile, Alice began her international career in winning style in Dublin helping the under-13 team to the gold medal. Alice was unbeaten, as were England in both the Under-13 and Under-15 categories.

The international call up capped a great week for Alice, following her English Closed Under-13 title win eight days ago.

Alice lined up alongside Jared Carter (Hampshire), Sam Todd (Yorkshire), Jack Mitterer (Kent),and Eve Coxon (Oxfordshire. as they began their campaign on Friday afternoon with a tough encounter with France. It was a big moment for many of the team making their debut and the nerves were there to see. But everyone settled and England ran out 5-0 victors.
The match on Saturday morning against Scotland produced the same scoreline despite some spirited resistance from the Scots. It was clear that England were the stronger unit and Alice looked at home in the exalted company as further 5-0 victories against Ireland and Wales went into the scorebook.
Alice went through the tournament without dropping a game, Her athleticism and composure serving her incredibly well. A terrific international debut with, we hope, more to follow.

All the matches have been competitive and we’ve been tested by Ireland in both age groups. Yesterday afternoon Sam Todd in particular having a cracking win against Sam Buckley, having been 2-1 down for the U13s and today Jasmin Hutton for the U15s having a bit of a battle with Ellie McVae which she came through well in the end to complete two 5-0 wins.

Tom Walsh finished the weekend giving a great little speech thanking Paul Nugent and his team at Irish Squash, the clubs (Mount Pleasant and Leinster CC) the referees and all the playersand this would be a good time to echo those thoughts.
