Success and progress are not always calculated in silverware and trophies. Sometimes the real winners of sport are those who turn up week after week, tournament after tournament willing to give everything they have got probably knowing that won’t be heading home with their name atop the winners’ list.
Not everyone can be an instant success. Many of us are late developers and only through perseverance, determination and sheer dedication do the plaudits eventually arrive.
So the news that one of Essex Junior Squash’s hardest-working and dedicated young players, 15 year old Sujan Srindran, reached his first-ever Bronze tournament final this month after four years of trying, certainly warms the cockles of our heart.
Sujan, who attends Year 11 at Kantor King Solomon High School in Barkingside, is a cracking lad who, alongside younger sister Renihta, can be found on a squash at Connaught or Redbridge most days of the week. Their dedication is only matched by that of their mum and dad Thilaga and Sri who, like a lot of squash parents, spend most weekends travelling around the country to tournament after tournament.
All that graft and commitment paid off for Sujan at the David Lloyd England Squash Bronze event at Purley on December 2-3 when he reached his first final. The Under-17 title eluded our young hero, but it can only be a matter of time before the spoils are finally his. This time, Sujan had to take second billing to another Essex player, Ollie Green, one of the brightest young squash talents in the country. So no shame there. We are sure it won’t be long before we are reporting Sujan’s first ‘Top Spot’ result.
