Essex pair fall in Hong Kong quarter finals

English interest in the PSA Tour’s Hong Kong Open ended when Essex pair Peter Barker and Daryl Selby fell to higher-ranked opponents in the quarter-finals of the $150,000 event.

World no.10 Selby lost 3/0 to top seed Gregory Gaultier in 45 minutes, while world no.8 Barker (pictured) extended Egyptian second seed Mohamed Elshorbagy to four games before making his exit after a 51-minute encounter.

Seventh seed Selby has beaten Gaultier only once on the PSA Tour in his career, but a repeat never looked likely as the world no.1 from France triumphed 11-2, 11-3, 11-8.

Fifth seed Barker has a similar record against Elshorbagy, but the left-hander took the first game 11-9 before the world no.3 from Egypt hit back to claim the next three – 11-7, 11-9, 11-3 – and the match.
