ESSEX’S Daryl Selby was part of the double winning England squad celebrating victory in Poland at the weekend after claiming both titles at the European Squash Team Championships.
England’s women maintained their domination of the Championships as they beat France in the final in Warsaw to record a sixth consecutive victory, and a 38th in 39 stagings of the event.
Starting off the third consecutive England v France final, Victoria Lust put the defending champions ahead with a straight-games win over Laura Pomportes. Next up was the top string match, and World no.2 Massaro proved too strong on the day for Camille Serme as she too won in straight games to keep England’s grip on the title.
The England men regained the European Squash Team Championship title, avenging their defeat by France in 2015 in what was the ninth consecutive final between the two nations.
Chris Simpson started proceedings, comfortably defeating Lucas Serme in straight games to put England in a strong position. In the battle of the no.1s, Greg Gaultier, proved too strong for James Willstrop, but crucially the Yorkshireman took a game from the World Champion. Tom Richards shut the door on any possibility of a France comeback, downing Geoffrey Demont 3-0 to seal England’s win, their 40th in 44 Championships.
