Collette and Yusuf lead Essex assault at Tom Elton-Barratt event at Stortford

by | Dec 2, 2014

ESSEX pair Collette Whittington and Yusuf Sheikh were both among the winners at last weekend’s Tom Elton Barratt Junior Bronze event at Bishops Stortford.

With over 70 players (32 from Essex) and more than 130 matches, it was a hectic schedule for a tournament that made a donation from all entry fees received to the charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) on behalf of Tom Elton-Barratt , in whose memory the event was held. CRY was founded in 1995 to raise awareness of conditions that can lead to young sudden cardiac death and sudden death syndrome. Please check out their website. http://www.c-r-y.org.uk/

IMAG0848Yusuf (pictured right)  has been in excellent form this season and he added to that success with some impressive play in the boys under-11’s. He beat Hertfordshire’s Benjamin Kelling in his opening match before facing the first of two Mailik brothers, Heston. The Connaught player prevailed 11-9, 11-8 to set up final encounter with Bailey Malik which he again controlled winning 11-8, 11-3.

That win capped a busy weekend for Yusuf. On Saturday he competed in the Lakeside Junior Open in Wimbledon finishing runner up after four tough matches. His sister Aliza also competed in the boys event due to the lack of girl players. Despite winning two of her matches she just missed out on reaching the semi-finals.

Collette, meanwhile, enjoyed two comfortable victories over Isabelle Johnson and Charlotte Davies before a winner-takes-all finale against Taylor Mounter from Cambridgeshire. In what proved to be the match of the day, Collette surrendered the opening game 12-10 but came storming back in the second reversing the score in another 12-10 nail-biter. With all to play for in the third, Collette held her nerve to claim victory and first prize winning 11-6, much to the delight of her coach Dave Webster.
