Alice Green and Lucy Turmel claim English titles at Edgbaston Priory

by | Mar 15, 2016

Essex were well represented at last weekend’s Tecnifibre English Junior Championships (EJC) at the Edgbaston Priory Club with 16 players from the county in the starting line-up.
And it proved a happy hunting ground for Alice Green who claimed her third consecutive English title when she lifted the U-15 title beating Eve Coxon in the final. Alice, who plays for Kingswood SC and trains at the Off The Wall Squash Academy in Colchester, is in a rich vain of form right now having won the French Junior Open a month ago.

Another OTWS player, Lucy Turmel, who represents Suffolk but coached by Lee Drew, claimed the Under-17 title beating Karyna Tyma in the final having earlier claimed a 3-1 win over Essex’s Elise Lazarus in the semi-finals. It was a notable double for coaches Lauren and Paul Selby who were at courtside for both Lucy and Alice throughout the entire tournament.

Aaron Allpress notched up two good wins over Nicholas Harbour and Ben Merchant before losing to eventual U-17 finalist Curtis Malik and claiming a deserved sixth spot.

All eight  titles at the championships were claimed by the number one seeds.

The U13s winners mirrored each other, both finishing as runner up in 2015. British Junior Open champion, Sam Todd, added the EJC BU13 title to his resume defeating Sam Osbourne Wylde 3-0. In the GU13s, British Junior Open semi-finalist, Katie Malliff, continued her successful year to claim the title, defeating Torrie Malik 3-0 in a battle of the top seeds.

There were a pair of familiar names on the trophies in the U15s as both winners repeated as champions. Jared Carter defeated Benjamin Sockett 3-0 in the BU15 final whilst Alice Green, as we said, defeated Eve Coxon 3-0.

Tom Walsh claimed his first EJC title, defeating Curtis Malik 3-1 in the BU17 final. In the GU17, Lucy Turmel repeated as champion, defeating (5/8) Karina Tyma 3-0. Tyma was a surprise finalist, upsetting (2) Jasmine Hutton and (3/4) Josie Barker on her way to the final.

The U19s winners saw a pair of five- time winners. Patrick Rooney beat Kyle Finch 3-1 in the BU19 final. (3/4) Finch had upset (2) James Peach in the semi-final to set up the tie. Meanwhile, Georgina Kennedy defeated long time rival and friend, Amelia Henley 3-0 in the GU19 final. Kennedy is undefeated in the EJC since she was 12 years old.
