ONE swallow doesn’t make a summer but the sighting of Tom Bird certainly heralds the beginning of Spring.

Essex squash player Tom from Frinton added to his growing catalogue of celebrity  ‘selfies’ when he made his annual pilgrimage to Canary Wharf for the 50k PSA Classic featuring many of the world’s top squash stars.

Last year Tom bagged a cracker with India’s top player Suarav Ghosal as well as West Ham striker Andy Carroll. And he was up to his old tricks again on Monday when he joined a party from Off The Wall Squash on a trip to Docklands organised by coach Lauren Selby and her mum, Karen.

First to be ‘papped’ was none other than three times word champion Nick Matthew. That’s him at the top if you didn’t recognise the silly face. And it didn’t take long for another top PSA star, Laurens Jan Anjema from Holland to get in on the act. It was fun and games all afternoon as the Essex contingent spent time on the magnificent all-glass court at Canary Wharf followed by a Q&A session with British number one Nick.

A glorious day, capped off by watching first-round action cheering on Essex star Daryl Selby who overcame England’s Joe Lee. That match was followed by Nick against Eddie Charlton, Borja Golan virsus LJ and a final showdown between Adrian Waller and Fares Dessouki of Egypt.
