The Essex primary school Lexden Squash Cup came to a thundering finale last week with six teams going head to head in the final round of three-stages of matches.
Tiptree, Mersea and Stanway primary schools each fielded two teams consisting of Year 3 and Year 4 players, and the quality of competitive squash was quite outstanding.
The final round of group matches saw Tiptree B beat Stanway B 60-19; Stanway A overcome Mersea B 49-46 and Mersea A defeat Tiptree A 53-30.
That left the group-stage leader table reading:
1st Mersea A 286
2nd Tiptree A 245
3rd Mersea B 230
4th Stanway A 228
5th Tiptree B 214
6th Stanway B 92
The competition then saw a final shoot-out for the overall positions.
Tiptree B faced Stanway B in the 5/6 play-off. Tiptree eventually took the win and 5th position winning three of the four games. Stanway battled to the final point and showed great spirit despite losing 59-36 .
In the third-fourth play-off, Mersea B managed to reverse their earlier defeat against Stanway A clinching a nail bitingly close finish,50-49 to clinch the bronze medal.
And in a battle of the giants, Mersea A once again took on Tiptree A. The two teams have been dominant throughout the tournament and this time it was EFS Mersea A who took all four wins and the Lexden Cup with a 60-27 score line.
It was Mersey’s fourth consecutive title win in the Years three and four category, a huge achievement for the players and their coaches.
Thanks to Paul Allen for running the Lexden Cup and to Lexden Squash and Rackets Club for providing the venue for the next generation of squash players.
