REPORT BY LEE HORTON
EXPERIENCED Essex ‘Juniors’ Lauren Briggs and Barbara Sanderson were crowned British Open Masters Champions at the weekend after a thrilling tournament at the Colets Club in London.
Former world number 18 Lauren was in mercurial form as she dominated the Over-35 event culminating in an impressive 3-0: 9-0, 9-0, 9-1 23-minute final victory over Kent’s Keeley Seamons. Lauren, from the Connaught Club in Chingford, won the title last year and also added the European Master’s crown to her CV in Malmo, Sweden last September.
Meanwhile, Barbara, from Romford, met her friend and Essex colleague Joan Witton in the final of the Over 75’s. They two ladies have been friendly foes for many years and have produced a library full of encounters that have been a credit to both them, and squash.
On this occasion, Barbara took the honours winning 3-0 although, as ever, the match was competitive from start to finish.
Congratulations ladies. You are an inspiration to all the other ‘junior’ players throughout the county.
