PAUL ALLEN REPORTING

Eleven teams of Year 5-6 boys and girls from eight different primary schools competed in the first day of the ‘Lexden Cup’ mini squash tournament at Lexden Rackets and Fitness club last Friday.

The tournament is an extension of a squash-in-schools outreach programme in the North Essex area which sees our squash coaches going into primary school sports halls and teaching all the skills required to play the game of squash.

Schools are then encouraged to enter a team of two boys and two girls from either year five or six to compete against other local school teams in either the ‘Roman Cup’ at the Garrison squash courts or the ‘Lexden Cup’ at Lexden Rackets and Fitness Club.

After a brief run through of the basic rules and format from club head coach and event organiser Paul Allen, the pupils got to play on proper squash courts using mini squash equipment hopefully putting into practice everything they learned back in their school sports hall.

In the ‘Lexden Cup’ the teams will play a total of ten matches over three dates this half term.

After the first day defending champions Tiptree Heath primary school sit once again in top spot. However, this may change throughout dates two and three as other school catch up with their number of matches played.
