MASSARO TARGETS TITLES AND WORLD No.1 SPOT

Laura Massaro, who this month lost her world no.2 ranking to Egypt’s Raneem El Welily, is aiming to get it back – and then to bid for the no.1 spot held by Malaysia’s Nicol David.

The 31-year-old from Lancashire (pictured above left) has been world champion – winning the 2013 event staged last March – but has never held the game’s top ranking.

However, she told BBC Radio Jersey: “I believe in every training session that I can still challenge for the number one spot and win more titles.”

Massaro’s immediate target is the first WSA Gold 50 event of the year, the Tournament of Champions, which begins for the leading women on January 19 at New York’s Grand Central Station.

“I didn’t manage to (successfully) defend my World Open title in December, so I’m looking really to try and do as well as I can in all the World Series events.” said the TOC’s second seed, who faces a qualifier in round one.

“There are a lot of targets to hit and as a competitor you want to try and win as many as you can, but to grab a handful would be amazing.”
