MASSARO SEEKING TO MAKE WORLD SQUASH HISTORY

by | Dec 13, 2014

Laura Massaro will be looking at creating her own slice of history when she defends her WSA Women’s World Championship in Egypt next week.

No woman has won three world squash titles in a year before – but that is the tantalising prospect if the 31-year-old second seed triumphs at the Wadi Degla Club in New Cairo on December 20.

“I thought being world champion and world team champion was pretty good,” Massaro told BBC Sport. “But three world titles in one year – there are probably not many people in history who have done that.”

This unique scenario has come about because the 2013 Championship in Penang was held in March this year.

“I’ve had a lot of good publicity and a lot of good things have come from winning that World Open title,” said Massaro, who skippered England to victory in the World Women’s Team Championship in Canada last weekend.

“Obviously it would have been nice to hold it for a whole year, but I had so much coverage that it feels like I’ve had it ages anyway.

“I’m on the board of the Women’s Squash Association and I’m happy that doing it this way means we get our World Open back on track. It’s not ideal to have played the 2013 World Open in 2014.”
