THE Colchester Garrison squash courts were rocking again on Thursday when more than 70 schoolchildren competed in the finals of this season’s Off The Wall Squash Roman Cup competition.
The finals saw 10 teams going full tilt in pursuit of glory producing a level of squash that left Lieutenant Colonel Ciaran Griffin OBE, Commander of Colchester Garrison, suitably impressed. He told the packed audience:” The level of commitment from the children and their standard of squash was simply excellent.
“To watch so many young players from Colchester using the excellent facilities at The Garrison is hugely satisfying. The agreement between The Garrison and Off The Wall Squash is a great partnership.”
Those sentiments were echoed by senior OTWS coach Lauren Selby who told the packed gallery:” The Roman Cup is growing each and every year. The level of squash and participation levels are hitting new heights which is absolutely thrilling. Our schools’ programme has already produced several top county players and it looks like we have discovered some new stars of the future.”
Ardeligh St Mary’s first team were triumphant in the Year Three division pipping runners-up Lawford to the top prize. The success also helped Mia Milne to the Best Girl award. Alex Kemp from Lawford was named best boy.
Dedham School lifted the Year 4 event with their haul of 382 points sealing top spot ahead of Lawford. Rebecca Morley and Elliott Brown were named best players.
The Roman Cup is growing in strength and becoming a huge entry point into squash for hundreds of schoolchildren. The Army’s Media team were there to report on the finals and there will be an in-depth report on the British Forces Broadcasting Service radio as well as The Garrison’s own newspaper, The Herald.
