Magnificent Millie crowned world Uni champ

Derbyshire’s Millie Tomlinson is the new world university women’s champion after thrashing top seed Olga Ertlova in the final of the 2014 championship in India.

The 22-year-old 5/8 seed’s 11-8, 11-6,11-1 rout of the world no.59 from the Czech Republic maintained her astonishing giant-killing run in the Chennai event.

In consecutive rounds the world no.141 has seen off Canada’s Alix Younger (ranked 133), South African 3/4 seed Cheyna Tucker (73) and Egyptian second seed Farah Abdel Megid (62), all by 3/1 margins.

However, her straight-games victory was the icing on the cake for Tomlinson as she became only Britain’s second world universitywomen’s champion, following in the footsteps of Jenny Tranfield in 1998.

She told Squash Site: “I must say this is one of my biggest wins. This is a world level title. I am truly happy.”

Nottinghamshire’s Eddie Charlton completed a fine day for the British team by winning the bronze medal in the men’s event.

The world no.55, who lost to Egyptian top seed Mezan Hesham in yesterday’s semi-finals, gained some compensation by beating Pakistan’s Saqib Yousaf, his fellow 3/4 seed, 7-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-8.
